My American Idol Rants

So I have some soap boxes in my life I like to rant and rave about. Politics is one... American Idol is another. And with all the huff and puff going on about the judges saving Jessica Sanchez last night, my soap box has grown and I needed a place to rant and rave about it instead of scaring my poor husby to death. If you don't like Colton Dixon and are in love with Hollie Cavanagh, I wouldn't recommend reading my opinions.

So I love Idol and this season has been one of the best in my opinion, but I have soapboxes all the way through. First off, they brought back Germaine! What?!? I was so excited when he got kicked off! I had nicknamed him moo-moo because his voice was so low that on one song I couldn't understand what he was saying... He just sounded like he was mooing. And they brought him back! The week before he got kicked off the show for his warrants though I thought he was a little edgy so I wasn't at all surprised when he got the boot.

Then, top 24... why did the judges bring back Jeremy Rosado as a wildcard? Sure he was a sweet kid, but it was painfully obvious that he wasn't going to make it far. I predicted he would be the first one to go and he was. No big shocker there, but why didn't they choose to wildcard someone with a little more talent like Jen Hirsh or something?

DeAndre is another one that has had me on edge. I could never understand why the judges loved him so much. I mean, who wants to listen to a man who sounds like a girl all the time? One of his performances was so bad that it caused my physical pain... I was literally going into convulsions on my couch. I am so glad he is gone. It is just better overall for America's health. Personally, I would rather kill 10 black widows then listen to a whole album by him, and that is saying something! I know when I go watch the tour and it is his turn to perform, that will be the point in the concert when I will go get my popcorn.

As far as the top seven goes, they are exactly who I predicted they would be. Talls and I made a bet with the top 13 and we made lists of how we thought they would get kicked off so I predicted the top 7 right. From here for me it goes...

Hollie Cavanagh
Phillip Phillips
Elise Testone
Colton Dixon
Joshua Ledel
Skylar Laine
Jessica Sanchez

Looking back I wish that I would have done the top 4 a little differently, but I believe in the next 3 I have going home. Hollie no longer deserves to be there no matter what anyone else has to say. Between her and Jessica, I don't think she has a chance. They are both power singers, but singing to Jessica is like breathing. For Hollie, she over thinks everything. She doesn't connect with the audience because she is too worried about her performance being technically correct... and a lot of the time, that pushes her off pitch and it's just terrible. I can't wait for her to go home.

As for Phillip Phillips, he has always been in the middle for me, but with every week that passes he works his way to the bottom. He is just getting way too boring for me, but I don't really have anything bad to say about him... nothing good either. He's just there.

Elise Testone... She has an incredible and unique voice and I don't think she gets enough credit for it. The thing with her though is song choice. If she picks the right song for her voice (think Whole Lotta Love) she is incredible! If she doesn't pick the right song (I Wanna Know What Love Is), then it's a complete mess. On her good nights though, she is definitely one of my faves.

Colton Dixon... He is my absolute favorite contestant ever to be on the show. I am completely in love with him and will be first in line to buy his album when it comes out. He could do absolutely nothing wrong in my eyes and for me it doesn't matter whether he wins or not... he is my American Idol. But again, I don't think he receives enough credit for his talent. I think he is the most relevant contestant on the show and will find the most success once all is said and done. The only exception to that would be Skylar... but we will get to that in a minute.

Joshua Ledel... I am not a gospel fan right up front. So what he can do all those crazy runs? He does them every week! Show me something different! Show me that you don't have to do all those vocal fireworks and that they aren't a crutch for you. Show me that you don't have to shake your hands like your having some kind of religious revival. Just show me something that can prove to me you can be a relevant artist today! I did however like the Bruno Mars song he did and I will recognize that he has a good power voice, but I don't really fall for those tricks like other people do.

Skylar Laine... I really really enjoy her and think she will go on to do well in the area of country music. She is entertaining to watch and I like how she relates to every song she does. She can sing the high powerful ballads, but she can also act her age and be young and playful with her songs. I don't know how far she will make it, but again I think she is a very marketable artist and will do well no matter what happens.

Jessica Sanchez... This girl has a great set of pipes and I couldn't agree more with Steven Tyler when he said, "When God gave out vocal cords, you were so at the front of the line." This girl has got talent and the most amazing part is that she is only 16! Again, she trumps her counterpart Hollie in every single way. Singing for her is more natural, she has incredible control, and great composure and poise. She isn't my favorite but I totally stand behind the judges decision to use their save on her. I fully believe that she has the most vocal talent this year and deserves to make it to the top. I may not buy her album, but that's only because I think she would do a different genre than I like. I do think one thing she could do better is have more self confidence. I don't think she realizes just how good she is, but once she does she will be able to put an irresistible confidence into her songs and performances that will give her the edge she needs.

So there you go. My opinions, rants, and raves on this years American Idol. If you don't agree, don't worry about arguing with me. I am alone in my family on most of my opinions, but I will not crumble! And I don't care if you agree with me either because I know what I like in my music choices and that is it.

A Small Adventure

So this adventure is one pertaining particularly to Smalls, but I think it qualifies to be featured on the blog. It made me laugh anyways. So I am in German 2 this semester which is a 1000 level class and the majority of students in 1000 level classes are freshman so this should really come as no surprise. Anyways, in that class we do a lot of partner work so that we can have mini-conversations and learn to use our vocabulary. Well, the first day we did partner work, I got set up with this boy because everyone else already seemed to have chosen their partner. I didn't think anything of it until yesterday when I noticed that he might just be talking to me a little more than everyone else. I went home and told Talls that I had this feeling that boy was going to try and ask me out on a date and when he did I would be more than happy to flash my ring. Talls thought I was just imagining things because surely that's the first thing you look at when contemplating asking a girl out, right?

Turns out not. So today in class, we were partnered together again to do some exercises and after class as we were packing up our stuff getting ready to go he looked at me and was like, "Can I ask you a question?" I thought for sure it was going to be about the homework or something so I was fine with that, but then he came out with something along the lines of, "Do you want to go to a club dinner with me tonight?" I about died... I wasn't sure if he was actually asking me out on a date or not so I asked him what he meant exactly and he just looked at me weird and repeated himself. Then I had to break out with, "Um... I'm actually married." As soon as I said that he got a shocked deer-in-the-headlights look and started apologizing up the wazoo. I tried to tell him it was okay as I left but I think he was just too embarrassed for words. Poor kid. So either now partner exercises will be super awkward in German or I will have to revert to last semester and try to hold conversations with myself. Either way, it was a very flattering and amusing experience. I just hope I didn't scar the poor kid for life!

Choose Your NFL Team

So all during high school I would attend football games out of obligation... singing the anthem, dancing at half time, things like that. But recently, just this season in fact, I have actually started to really love football. And it helps a ton that I am starting to really understand the rules... However, liking football has also come with a slight problem. When I try to engage in football conversations, the question always comes up, "Who is your team?" To which I reply with a stony glare and an "um..." In order to solve this problem I have spent the last three days researching all of the NFL teams, ranking them on five characteristics (state, colors, third down conversions, number of utah players, and win-loss record), plugged those numbers into a complex math formula and have chosen the 5 teams with the highest score. Out of a possible 75 points, the New York Jets scored 60, New York Giants scored 53, Denver Broncos scored 49, Tennessee Titans scored 49, and Pittsburgh Steelers scored 47. From there I decided to watch game clips of all 5 teams and from doing so I have been able to pick my favorite NFL team, swiftly and effectively. This YouTube video shows highlights of my team from last season:

Yup... that's right. Now I can fill in those awkward silences with J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets!

A Special Post for Matt

First off, to explain the title of this post, Talls's daddy is currently in the hospital and Talls asked if I would print off some blog entries to take to him to maybe entertain him for a bit. I was looking through the old blog and I realized I haven't posted since August! How incredibly sad is that! So I thought that maybe I should update and put up some stories that Talls's dad might enjoy reading.

Story #1 - This occurred last Sunday night. We were getting ready to have our scripture study when Talls was updating his planner. I asked if I could see his schedule just to know what my Monday was going to be looking like when he got all defensive about it. Turns out that he had written down ideas on what he wanted to get me for Christmas and refused to let me see the list for some odd reason. I tried everything I knew how to get that list from him. When he said he wanted to burn it, I confiscated our lighters. Then I protected the trash when he wanted to throw it away. Finally, it came down to me chasing him down the street yelling, "Come back here! There are rocks and I don't have a bra on!" and him running away yelling, "Get away from me you crazy woman!" May I just mention that we were in our PJ's and neither of us was wearing shoes? Well finally, I gave up and went back to the house (seeing as we had also left the door open in our chase). Unfortunately, he got there first and locked me out until he had sufficiently torn the list up into little tiny pieces and buried them in the trash can. We were then able to get on with our scripture study, but not before I tried to dig through the trash first :)

Story #2 - Last Tuesday (the day before Thanksgiving), Talls and I decided to go support our institute teacher by going to his night class. We have an LDS History class from him on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and he had mentioned how worried he was that no one would show up to his class on Tuesday night so we decided to go and support. The lesson was amazing and yada yada yada... However, the good part of this story comes after class. Talls went and sat down at the piano and asked me to sing to him. He then proceeded to play the song Someone Like You by Adele and when I didn't sing he decided to just do it himself... except he was joking around and sang it totally off tune. I had been talking to Brother Barret and the second he heard Talls start to sing, he flipped his head toward the piano and a look of complete and utter terror crossed his face. He then looked back at me with an expression that looked a little bit like, "What was that?" and I just busted up laughing. It was the funniest, most candid reaction I have ever seen from an institute teacher! He did feel a little bit better when he knew Talls wasn't actually serious. Then yesterday, the plot thickened. We were at institute talking about the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. We were talking about the hymn A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief and Brother Barrett asked someone to read (or sing) verse 6. Talls volunteered us to sing it, but Brother Barrett just looked at him and was like, "Please, no. Not like last time." Talls and I cracked up laughing like lunatics and since no one else from our class was there that night, they probably thought we were crazy too.

Story #3 - The last story is just kind of a sweet one. About a week and a half ago, there was a fall formal put on by the institute. Talls really wanted to go, but there was one small problem. No married people allowed! And plus, I hate dances. Well the same night of that formal just happened to be my turn to plan date night and so even though I wanted to go to the ballroom dance performance or perhaps even to Happy Feet 2, I decided to be sweet and created a Johnson Fall Formal instead. First of all, I locked the door on him so he couldn't come in when he got home from work. When I answered the door, I made him close his eyes and guided him to our room where I had laid out on our bed a nice shirt and tie combo with an 'official' ticket to our formal. I made him stay there while I finished my preparations of dressing up in a nice skirt, finishing our relatively fancy dinner put on paper plates because no real dance ever has the funds to afford nice china, making a customized playlist for the dance part of our date, and creating a homemade sign to put on our wall that said, "Johnson Fall Formal." When all the preparations were made, I brought him out although not before I thoroughly examined his ticket cuz ya know... he could have forged it or been trying to sneak into the dance illegally :) Then we had a nice dinner with romantic background music that is special to us then danced to a couple of songs that I had specially planned out to end on a slow dance to Marry Me by Train which is the song he used to propose to me with. I think that date meant a lot to Talls and he still hasn't allowed me to take down the Johnson Fall Formal sign.

So there you have it. There is an update of my blog after 3 months and some nice stories to do it with. Hopefully I will be able to remedy my relationship with this said blog and get into a somewhat regular blogging habit... Easier said than done.

Day 28: The Past Year In Great Detail

Okay so honestly I have been dreading this post ever since I started this 30 days of posts thing which is why it is coming in so late, but here goes nothing....

August 2010 - I was just starting my sophomore year of college and surprisingly breaking out of my shell to make friends with some really awesome roomies... my dutch girls! Miss them so much. If we are also including the first half of August in this, I was able to take a nice trip to Glenwood Springs, CO with my mom and step pops. It was way fun! By far my favorite part was the river rafting/ropes course/ziplining day. It was amazing and I have been wanting to do another ropes course/zipline ever since. Maybe someday...
September 2010 - Um... Yeah, I really don't remember much about this month. I think it was just standard school, institute, roomie bonding and such... Not too much exciting.
October 2010 - Elder Warren left on his mission to NYC. This wouldn't seem like a big enough deal to make my blog since we weren't even speaking to each other, but it was huge to me. I mean, this kid broke my heart and I had spent the entire year trying to get over him and I thought for sure when he left on his mission it would make things easier, but it just didn't. What made it easier will come later on in this post.
November 2010 - This is the month I interviewed for and received my patriarchal blessing and limited use temple recommend. I felt good! I was also able to show my dutch roomies what Thanksgiving is and it was way fun taking them home with me and going shopping and such. This is the month they also invited me to go to NYC with them in December and somehow I managed to talk my mom into letting me go. Way cool!
December 2010 - By far the biggest month of my year... sorta. On December 3rd, I met Talls and the whole week following we spent just hanging out and getting to know each other. Then I left for NYC with my lovely Holland girls on the 10th. I loved loved loved NYC! I just feel sorry for them because I couldn't stop texting Talls the entire time I was there. I still feel way bad about that, but in a way I don't cuz all those hours of texts and phone calls really brought us closer together. My favorite part about NYC and the one thing I would do if I could only spend one more day there was the museum on 9/11. It was so emotional being there and seeing pictures and reading stories. It just brought everything about that day closer to home in the most amazing way possible. Ellis Island was also gorgeous! I got home from NYC on the 19th and my grandma died on Christmas and it was about time too... We are all super happy that she is with my grandpa again, right where she belongs :) And on the 27th, buddy made the 2 hour trip to come visit me. We had our first kiss on temple hill and then he told me he wanted to marry me so the rest of my month was occupied with crazy thoughts of marriage.
January 2010 - I came back down to start spring semester. Talls and I hung out all the time and made arrangements for the wedding like hiring a photographer and I got my dress. That was all before he officially proposed to me on the 27th. We had gone to the temple to do baptisms and then he took me to my favorite cupcake shop in the world. With our cupcakes, we went up on a hill overlooking St. George to eat dinner and of course, our cupcakes. Well he had put my ring on top of my cupcake and I was absolutely in shock when I saw it. He then played Marry Me by Train on his phone and asked me to dance, but I was too in shock to even move, so we just sat there instead and when the song was over, he stood me up, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. Obviously I said yes :)
February 2010 - I really remember like nothing from February so moving on...
March 2010 - Spring break! Loved it! Talls was able to come home with me for a weekend and it was super fun hanging out with old friends and playing cards with my rents. By the way, I have the funnest and hippest parents on this planet!
April 2010 - I got a job! Well actually, I got it in March, but I really started getting into it in April. Good stuff. I also had my bridal shower over Easter break and Talls was able to go home with me then too.
May 2010 - Um... So I got married this month which I kinda think is a big deal yeah? Yeah. I also got to move out of a dorm for the last time! Ya! No more smeer lappen to battle with. Just an adorable husby to pick up after :) And on the 13th I took out my endowments. Then went on a honeymoon to SLC, or more correctly, temple square.
June 2010 - Worked, worked, and worked some more! Also got to go home for the Mormon Miracle Pageant which was near and dear to my heart and just an overall great experience. I highly recommend going if you have never gone before. It's life changing! Literally...
July - August 2010 - Can I just let you read my month in great detail? Too bad if not, cuz I will anyways. That is all.

Day 27: The Last Month, In Great Detail

Wow... A whole month to detail for you guys. I don't even remember last week, let alone last month. Well I guess we will do our best...

A month ago was obviously July 19th. I know that my birthday is on July 23rd and Talls and I took a trip to my home for it. From Talls I got a book, What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen (my fave author ever!!!), the movie Charly (tear jerker), and some coolio capsules that you put in water and they dissolve into sponges. My present from my mom was going to the Idols Live concert earlier in the month which was awesome! Plus a shopping spree that same trip. And my dad gave me what my dad typically gives... a squash, a cucumber, some food to add to my food storage, plus an amazing guitar tuner! and an iTunes gift card. Thanks all!
My birthday is awfully close to the 24th of July which just happened to be on a Sunday this year so it got celebrated on my birthday. That was fun getting to do the local town celebration of a parade and a celebration at the park. I don't think Talls was expecting much since the town I grew up in has about 500 people versus his 30,000, but he was pleasantly surprised. I also baked an awesome birthday cake for myself and put some rubber duckies on top which are now sitting in my shower. I also got a birthday balloon which blew up on the way home scaring everyone in the car. Great fun.
The last Sunday in July, Talls and I had to speak in sacrament on priesthood leadership and given it was my first ever sacrament talk, I think I did pretty well. In fact I went to the dentist today and my hygienist is a girl in my ward and she told me that she enjoyed our talks, especially the part when I elaborated on how Talls and I met and his stalkerish ways... Mwahahaha...
August 8th, 9th, and 10th, buddy and I took a nice mini vacay up to the SLC area to go to Thanksgiving Point, Lagoon, and Temple Square. Thanksgiving Point was good and the gardens were gorgeous (but hot). We both decided that we need to get Talls mom up there cuz she just loves gardening so she could easily spend a whole day there enjoying the gorgeous flowers and stuff. Lagoon was also a blast. It was fun watching Talls get all worked up over the roller coasters. For me, Lagoon began to loose its appeal the first time I went to Disneyland, but Talls has only spent a couple of hours in Disneyland and he had only been to Lagoon approx 3 times before I went with him so he was like a little kid in a candy shop. Too cute! The best part about it all was the fact that the lines were way short. Like max wait time = 20 minutes. Average was probably 5-10 which was great other than the fact that I can get motion sick sometimes and going on that many rides in the heat eventually did me in. Temple Square was also great, but that is in my week detail.
There is so much I am leaving out, but I'm honestly getting tired of these 30 days of posts. I have no idea how I'm supposed to tackle a whole year in detail. Whew... May have to take a break before getting to that one...

Day 26: Your Week In Great Detail

This should be a bit more exciting than my day in detail, but not by much...
Wednesday - This was the last day of a trip buddy and I had gone on. This day we decided to go to temple square and attend an endowment session along with visiting some of the buildings we didn't make it to while on our honeymoon. That temple has the prettiest celestial room ever! Granted I have only been in two other temples, but still. Gorgeous! We had lunch at the Olive Garden which was delicious and we had the coolest waitress. She was awesome! Maybe she was just working for a good tip, but she deserved one thats for sure. Then we went back and toured the Church History Museum which was really cool and then stalked some brides before we had to leave at 5 to go have dinner with one of his friends in Roy. I had never met her or her husband but they were really fun to hang out with for a couple of hours before we headed home. We got out of there a little before nine and with construction and all, it took us a little over 5 hours to get home. It was such a struggle to stay awake but we made it and it was worth it!
Thursday - I don't really remember much about this day except buddy didn't have to do a whole lot of working and so we got to hang out a bit. what we did exactly I don't recall although I do know we went grocery shopping.
Friday - One of my good friends from high school was having her bridal shower this day so I made the 2 hour trek home to celebrate with her. It was a great shower and I even won at two of the games... famous partners & bingo (I got blackout first). I was also able to visit my daddy which was good. Friday nights are usually our date nights so we just had a nice game night and played some Racko and Mancala and Connect 4. Buddy also let me do his makeup... haha... It was a very good makeup job though. If only it had been on a girl... After we played our games we walked down to McDonalds (with buddy's makeup still on) and got some kiddie cones. It was fabulous.
Saturday - Buddy didn't have to work much this day either so we played some more games in the morning and then cleaned during the afternoon. I was able to tackle our study room which has been driving me bonkers ever since he got all of his stuff moved in and cluttered everything up with random books and papers. It was bad, but now you can actually see our desks and I love it! That night was the Miss Iron County pageant which we went to because A) I love pageants and B) One of my roomies was competing (she took 1st attendant! Yeah! Go Emilee!). It was Tall's first pageant and he actually enjoyed it which makes me happy cuz that means I can take him to more :) After the pageant we came home and hip hopped it up before bed time.
Sunday - Right before we went to bed Saturday night, Talls got a call from his little sister saying that their mom had been injured in a hike earlier that day and wouldn't be able to play the piano in sacrament so buddy had to cover for her. We also had a farewell to go to for one of his friends. When we came home, we had a lovely and adventurous lunch for our third month anniversary (details of that are contained in day 24's post). After that I don't remember much of what happened that day although I'm sure it was great.
Monday - I went back to work after a week off for my last 40 hour work week before school starts! Yay! And we had a great FHE lesson that night and other than that, I also don't remember much from that day.
Yesterday - Another work day, which was detailed in yesterday's post. For those of you wondering (for the one of you who is actually reading this and maybe wondering) I did go get my haircut by possibly the cutest and nicest beautician working for any great clips anywhere! and then went home, made dinner, and buddy didn't go to ultimate frisbee so we watched Love Happens instead.
Yup... that's my week.
